Process Art is such a fun way to create art because the end result is not necessarily the goal of the art. Instead, the goal of process art is that the act of making the art is more relevant. So for toddlers and preschoolers this is such a fun way to created art. They do not need to feel the pressure to make something beautiful but instead to enjoy making art and crafts.
Today for our process art, we decided to paint with spaghetti! We made our own paintbrushes, we talked about what it might be like to paint with spaghetti. And of course my children wanted to experiment with spaghetti paintbrushes (spoiler: cooked or uncooked).

Process Art: Learning to Make Paintbrushes
We started out by discussing how we would make paintbrushes from spaghetti. We talked about how paintbrushes have a handle to hold that is not flexible and bristles that are flexible to paint. This lead to a discussion about spaghetti. We talked about what spaghetti looks like before it is cooked and afterwards. We talked about how spaghetti gets cooked and what makes the noodles soft to eat.

Supplies:
How to Make Paintbrushes
- Loop a rubber band around a handful of spaghetti noodles.
- Make as many paint brushes as you desire.
- Fill a pot with water to about 1/4-1/2 the length of the noodles.
- Boil the water.
- Place the noodles in the boiling water and cook until soft.
- Careful as the noodles soften, the noodles will not stand up as well and fall into the boiling water.
- Leave some paintbrushes out of the water if you want stiff bristles.

Painting with Spaghetti
After making your noodles, let the fun begin! Start painting with spaghetti! See how the brush works. Feel the difference between the stiff bristles and soft bristles. See how it allows you the flexibility to paint. Can you create a specific painting with the flexible bristles? Is it easier to make a design with bristles that are stiff? What do your paintings look like? Is it fun to feel how different they each paint? Or is it frustrating to paint with spaghetti?
