As we talked about in our last post, we love to reuse and recycle things to the best of our ability in our house. So today, on a whim, I noticed we had a couple of paper towel rolls laying around. Instead of throwing them in the recycling bin, I asked my toddler and preschooler if they wanted to do a paper towel roll craft? To start, they were skeptical but quickly it turned into something fun!

Paper Towel Roll Craft

This craft truly takes about 2 minutes to set up, which in my book is always a win.
How to Create Hearts
- Cut the paper towel roll in half for an easy to manage size for kids hands.
- Crease the paper towel roll on one edge.
- Gently pull the space across from the crease inward towards the crease to create another crease.
- Hold the two sides opposite in order to keep the tops of the heart round.
Supplies
- Paint
- Paper towel rolls (or toilet paper)
- Paper
Process Art: Heart Stamping
This is another form of process art. Creating the heart was engaging and fun for the kids. Initially, they could not understand how we were going to use paper towel rolls to make hearts. As they watched to see how the heart took shape, they were shocked to see how it turned out. Once the paper towel roll was turned into a heart, we squirted some paint and dipped our hearts into the paint and got to stamping. This was a free paint, there was no prompt, there were no examples. They were free to make whatever patterns or designs they desired. It was fun to see the difference between my toddler who just had fun stamping and my preschooler who created a more uniform pattern.
Another fun process art we have done: spaghetti painting.
