It is Pi Day today! If you are unaware, Pi Day is March fourteenth or 3.14! Since none of my children are quite old enough to understand the number as a math fact yet, we decided to celebrate Pi Day differently by utilizing our mud kitchen. Instead, we made mud pies for Pi Day.

Mud Pies
Have you ever met a kid who doesn’t love to play in the dirt? Okay, so maybe there are a few but generally, kids love to get dirty. We often talk about at our house how the dirtier the clothes, the better the day. Meaning days when we get outside and enjoy the world around us, tend to be the days everyone remembers most or that they say they had the most fun.
This year the week of Pi Day, the weather showed up. We had warm and sunny days! So we decided to get outside and make mud pies for Pi Day! We got outside into our mud kitchen and got to work. In our mud kitchen, we have some old pots and pans, plates, and utensils. So the kids had all the tools they needed to start making some pies.
How to Make Mud Pies
My kids truly took this task to heart. They started by grabbing some dirt, then they added some wet ingredients. They spent the time mixing and stirring. Then they shaped their pies and molded them into the pan. Once that was complete, while they “cooked”, they took the time to make some decorations. They started to shred some chalk into chalk dust. This is truly a fan favorite activity! We use this more often than you would probably think. Between designing decorations for pies and cakes in the kitchen, we even use it to draw on the driveway!
Gathering Supplies
Our favorite way to stock our mud kitchen is through either thrifting or a local buy nothing group. We have acquired a lot of different supplies from there to keep it cost effective and fun! One of the things we have personally bought are these potato graters. They are plastic and shred chalk really well without the risk for injury! We found them through @KissesUnderThePillow who has fantastic sensory play and bin ideas!!
