Over the summer, we participated in Camp Slumberkins which promoted a growth mindset for our children. We learned so many different things each week. The weeks were divided into four different growth categories. We learned to try your best, be flexible, take a break, and keep trying. One of the first activities that we did was something called Oobleck. This was a sensory activity that I had not heard of yet but I was so excited to try it.
Solid or Liquid
Oobleck is a completely new texture for us. When it is not being touched it is a more solid state but when it is picked up it becomes a liquid. At first my kids had a hard time picking up the mixture in the solid state but once they got the hang of it, they were pulling in some of our other sensory items to play with. Such a fun STEM lesson.
My son predominantly just enjoyed picking it up and letting it drip all over the bucket and cutting it apart when it was solid. My daughter on the other hand seemed to enjoy making some things with it. We have some molds that she was able to get the liquid to drip into and then it would create a solid form. This was also very fitting because our molds happen to be turtles, crabs, seahorses, etc and the Camp Slumberkins theme for the year was Under the Sea.

Simple Supplies
One thing I liked a lot about this activity is that it has only two ingredients and we typically have what we need at home already. We do not always have the large quantity of cornstarch but I did buy a large container of it after this activity so that I can quickly make this on rainy days.
Supplies:
- Cornstarch
- Water
- Container (see our sensory table we use linked here)
- Optional: food coloring, molds
Recipe:
- Mix 1 cup of water with 2 cups of cornstarch.
- Add food coloring if desired.
- Enjoy!
