This year for Valentine’s Day, my children really wanted to do something different than just a card. We talked about different crafts and thought through some ideas. In the end, my children really needed to have a fresh restock of their craft supplies (especially crayons) so we decided to make use of their old, broken crayons! In the end, we decided on some heart shaped crayons as Valentines this year.

Recycle and Reuse
We talk often in our house about recycling and reusing. We try to discuss giving to others and not wasting things that can still be useful. The goal is to think about another use for something before just disposing of it. In this case, we have a ton of broken crayons and while we can continue to use them, it is probably time for a restock. So instead of just getting rid of them, we decided to turn them back into larger crayons. We could have simply taken all the reds and made a red heart, etc. but instead, we tried to make some fun color combinations and gift them to our friends. For my oldest, she needs to address her Valentine’s to each kid in her class, so she was able to make some heart crayons out of their favorite colors. My younger two do not address to individuals, so they just picked some colors they felt looked great together.
Supplies

- Heart Shaped Silicone Mold
- Clear Plastic Bags
- Card Stock (for bag toppers)
- Our templates to print below.
- Crayons
- Use your old crayons and restock them afterwards!
How to Make Heart Shaped Crayons
- Preheat your oven to 250 degrees.
- Peel off the paper to all the crayons.
- Break crayons into small pieces.
- We turned this part into a fun activity!
- We allowed our kids to use some tools to break the crayons apart. They used hammers and pliers to break the crayons apart. This made for some super tiny pieces which meant the colors were more likely to mix but it created some pretty neat mixtures.
- When we broke our crayons into bigger pieces they were not as blended and took a little longer to cook.
- Place the crayon pieces into the heart molds.
- Mix the colors to your liking. Choose colors that look good together, use as many colors as you desire. Let your kids have fun and mix as they please, it is fun to see the end result!
- Place the mold on a cookie sheet.
- We have an old cookie sheet we use just for crafting.
- Put the cookie sheet and mold into the oven. Cook for about 12 minutes.
- All ovens cook a little differently. As I mentioned above out smaller pieces melted faster than bigger pieces.
- Remove the mold when the crayons are melted completely but before the colors all blend together and create a new color.
- Let the crayons fully cool. The new crayons will pop right out of the mold.
