We have been doused in rain this April, truly living up to the April Showers philosophy. The weather has started to warm up and it has allowed us more flexibility to get outside despite the rain. The other day, we decided to take to the puddles but instead of just puddle jumping, we did some puddle painting.

Puddle Painting
The puddles that formed in our driveway allowed us to experiment with making our puddles colorful. What started as truly just puddle jumping quickly changed. My son grabbed a piece of chalk and turned a puddle green. From there, everything escalated quickly! (Fortunately, or unfortunately, we have a handful of puddles in our driveway.) Everyone took to a puddle, and their favorite color chalk and started painting away. My littles were so impressed by how quickly the chalk disappeared in the water. My daughter loved being able to mix the chalk colors to create some more colorful and vibrant colors.

Expanded into Process Art
Once we finished coloring our puddles, obviously it was back to puddle jumping! What we quickly learned was that puddle jumping splashed colorful water everywhere. So began the fun of creating a colorful driveway, filled with colorful puddles and splash art all around. Did the driveway look beautiful afterwards, absolutely not. It looked like a chaotic toddler painting, but did my kids have fun and learn? Absolutely! They learned about mixing colors. We learned about vibrant colors and how water changes chalk colors. They learned about how splash patterns extend. The process of painting our driveway a mess was so much fun!
More process art for kids: paper towel roll painting, sun prints, and painting with a squeegee.
