We love to try new things around here, sometimes they don’t always pan out as we planned. Today, we attempted to make some Fall Geodesic Domes, it definitely did not go as planned. We will share our wins and our losses so that you can learn from our mistakes too. This was such a neat idea and we were excited to think about how to construct something for strength. In the end, there was no strength and only some sad attempts at fall geodesic domes.
Fall Geodesic Dome Attempts
Honestly, this activity started out well, we were able to stick a couple toothpicks into candy corn and candy pumpkins. Once we started trying to build, we immediately saw the failures. Candy corn would be an absolute no go for this activity. We had some simpler successes with candy pumpkins. Fall geodesic domes require multiple toothpicks to be placed into the same piece of candy. In the end, candy corn could not always hold even one toothpick and pumpkins failed more with two or more toothpicks.
Finding Fun in Failure
To give my kids some credit, they truly tried to create some fun buildings with the toothpicks and candy pumpkins. My son decided to build a pumpkin patch and connected all his pumpkins on a vine. He actually had some success connecting pumpkins with just two toothpicks. My oldest tried to create a more square and rectangular building where there was more of a spacing between toothpicks. My preschooler used her imagination and created some wands. While my toddler enjoyed eating some of the candy corn and candy pumpkins.
Future Geodesic Domes
Check back this winter, I think we will try this again but with something different. I anticipate us trying to make some igloos as the weather changes!
Candy Corn and Pumpkins Turned Sensory
Since this activity did not last for very long before the frustration set in, we switch very quickly to a sensory table. See how that turned out in our next blog post.
Supplies
If you decide this is worth a try (might work for older kids), all you need are toothpicks and candy pumpkins!
