We truly have been living April showers here, there has not been a day since April started that it has not rained. So we decided to make some rain art around here as well. This is a fun process art craft that can be done in some many different ways. Have you ever broken out a Squeegee to make some art? No, well we had not either but I think it might have to happen more often! So join us in painting with a squeegee today!

Process Art
Process Art is such a fun way to create art because the end result is not necessarily the goal of the art. Instead, the goal of process art is that the act of making the art is more relevant. So for toddlers and preschoolers this is such a fun way to create art. They do not need to feel the pressure to make something beautiful but instead to enjoy making art and crafts.

April Showers
Since this is process art, I wanted my kids to actually be involved in the process in making this piece of art. To start, we talked about how using the squeegee would work. Then we decided if we wanted to make pictures of just rain or if we wanted something of interest on the page as well. All of my children were free to choose what they desired, so we had a handful of different things in the end.
In order to get an object to either remain or to not be covered by paint, we had a couple of options. Most of my children decided to place an item on afterwards either cut out from cardstock or construction paper. They liked the idea of being able to incorporate colors and various layers. Another option we talked about was vinyl and being able to create rain on top of something but later remove it. This would in turn leave a blank area (think under an umbrella, etc).
Painting with a Squeegee:
- Orient the paper the direction you want the rain to fall.
- Place some scattered drops of paint across predominantly the top of the paper.
- Pull your squeegee straight down, fairly quickly.
- Ensure you pull as far as you want the paint to go.
- Repeat across the length of the paper.
- For added visual interest:
- Cut out flowers or people and umbrellas to place on top of the artwork.
- This is also where you could peel away the vinyl if you decided to go that route.

Here is another fun spring process art craft to try. Also check out what we use our squeegee’s for the most, when we do some sensory play!!
