We honestly love a good coffee filter craft. This is not the first and will not be the last coffee filter craft that we make. With the start of spring, we decided to make coffee filter butterflies! We had a beautiful day and we spent the day outside painting coffee filters.

Coffee Filter Crafts
Coffee filter crafts are so much fun. They are simple but they take on color so well. We really enjoy painting the coffee filters with watercolors as it absorbs well. The other nice aspect about painting coffee filters is that it dries fairly efficiently as well. This allows them to paint a couple and by the time they are done the coffee filter is dry and ready to assemble.
How To Make Coffee Filter Butterflies
- Paint coffee filters with watercolors (will need two per butterfly).
- If you would like your top and bottom wings to be identical, you can stack two coffee filters and the colors will seep through both.
- Allow the coffee filters to fully dry.
- Once dry, scrunch one of the coffee filters at the center.
- Try to keep the outsides fluffed out like a wing
- Repeat this step with the other coffee filter.
- Stack the two coffee filters together with the scrunching in the middle and the wings stacked.
- Wrap a pipe cleaner around the center of the two coffee filters.
- We wrapped around twice.
- Take the top of the pipe cleaner and twist it to create antennae.
- Enjoy your butterflies!
Developmental Benefits
This is such a fun craft! We talked a lot about how to make different colors. One of the best parts about watercolors is that they can blend pretty easily. So as we were coloring, we talked about how to make some different colors and even practiced on our butterflies. Another aspect is that scrunching the coffee filters and wrapping the pipe cleaners requires a lot of fine motor skills. All these crafts help to build creativity, build confidence, and improve fine motor skills!
Another fun spring craft that helps with fine motor skills is the torn paper flower craft!
