We are celebrating the Lunar New Year today. This year is the year of the snake. So we decided to make a snake craft to celebrate this year. Another craft we have done in the past is the red lantern. We have not been able to make it to the library this year due to illness so instead this year we also listened to some read a loud stories online to learn more about the holiday.

Read A Loud Stories
We absolutely love to visit our local library and learn all about different holidays. This year since we were under the weather, we chose some audiobooks to listen to online. The first story that we listened to was “My First Chinese New Year” by Karen Katz. This story helped us to understand some of the traditions that are celebrated during the Chinese New Year. We learned about sweeping out the bad luck, making soup for good luck, and red envelopes of money for good luck.
Next, we listened to “A Sweet New Year for Ren” by Michelle Sterling (Illustrator: Dung Ho). We really enjoyed this story and learned a lot about the labor that goes into celebrating the Lunar New Year. We also learned the lesson that everyone can help in one way or another.
Year of the Snake Craft
This was such a fun craft to make and also incredibly simple. We started out just by simply painting a paper plate the color we would want our snake to be. We let the front dry and then painted on the back as well. I created a template of how we would cut our paper plates to create a snake so that they could better understand how to paint it if they wanted a pattern. Once they were dry, we simply cut a spiral and then hung them from our ceiling to celebrate the Year of the Snake!
