Today is National Popcorn Day! So what better way to celebrate than to make a taste safe sensory bin?! This was an incredibly easy and also fun activity for my children. To begin, I think it is hard not to love popcorn but also this was such a different sensory bin for my kids.
National Popcorn Day
Truly, it appears that the origin of National Popcorn Day is unknown. Although the origin is unknown, it is a widely celebrated holiday with a beloved snack. Most people tend to celebrate it at the movie theater, where a bucket of popcorn may be filled for free. Here we decided that we would celebrate with a taste safe sensory bin!
Super Simple Sensory Bin
This was by far one of my easiest sensory bins. We timed it appropriately that it was given at a time where my kids would normally have a snack. This allowed for them to fully enjoy the sensory bin and it being taste safe. There were no rules around eating the popcorn and everyone was free to enjoy it as they desired. We just kept popping bags of popcorn and dumping it into our sensory table. Please make sure that this activity is age appropriate for your kids. Popcorn is a snack that all my children can now safely enjoy, otherwise we might have done it during nap time for some of our kiddos.
Supplies
- Popcorn
- Sensory Table
- Or just buckets
- Fine Motor Tools
Challenge Them to Play
We ended up using this sensory table mainly as a snack but I will say we definitely challenged my younger kids to work on their fine motor skills. We made it more of a game that in order to eat the popcorn you had to pick it up with a tool. My bigger kids were able to do this fairly easily but my littles had fun with the challenge.
If you enjoyed this sensory table, here is another fan favorite in our house that we use all winter!!
