It has truly been frigid these past couple of days. Let’s rescue our animals from the ice. We have gotten in some outdoor time but we quickly lose steam with how cold the temperatures have been. We truly would choose to be outside all the time, so to bring in a sense of the outdoors, we have been doing cold indoor activities. Today, we are rescuing our animals from the ice!
Rescue Our Animals
To make our animals frozen in ice today, we placed our animals inside of balloons and then filled the balloons with water and threw them in the freezer. This can be done any time of the year. Truthfully, it is cold enough here that we may repeat this activity but I may just fill our bin with water and animals and set it outside of a day. This would be a more realistic vision of the animals just getting stuck in ice during a storm (maybe also more morbid?). Due to the nature of the activity, this activity can be fairly time consuming. This is a nice way to spend some time if you need to get something done. It can also obviously get a little wet but in the grand scheme of things it really was not all that messy!
Science in Play
Today when trying to rescue our animals, I provided the kids with salt, room temperature water, and cold water. Each kid came up with their own hypothesis on which way would be the most effective way to get their animal free from the ice. We talked about how when it is cold and snowy, the salt trucks come by. Everyone asked questions about why salt and what happened. Technically, we learned all about the chemical reaction and what that can feel like on skin if you put your finger on the ice to help push it in.
Supplies
- Plastic animals
- Water
Truly those are the only two supplies that you need. We have done this many times and here are some other items we have used.
