To kick off the month of February, we celebrated the Lunar New Year. We learned about some of the traditions and reasons for the celebration. Then we learned that this year was the year of the tiger. In order to celebrate this a little more, we made a couple of tiger crafts. Come celebrate the Lunar New Year with us and make some crafts too!
Celebrate the Lunar New Year
Below are the crafts that we did in order to celebrate the kick off to the Years of the Tiger!
Origami Tiger
- Supplies
- Square piece of paper (preferably orange)
- Black crayon, marker, or pen
- Glue (optional)
- How To:
- Turn your square sideways so it looks like a diamond
- Fold the bottom corner up to meet the top (making a triangle)
- Take the point on the left and fold it over onto the right, creating a crease in the middle
- Open the triangle up again, so you can see the crease
- Fold down the top (approximately an inch)
- This will make the top of your tiger’s head
- Bring the right corner up, start at the crease on the bottom and fold up along the outside of the head
- This will be the tiger’s ear
- Repeat on the left side, folding from the crease up on the outside of the head
- If needed, these pieces can be glued (head and ears)
- Turn the origami over and you have the shape of a tiger head
- Add eyes, mouth, nose, and stripes as desired!
Tiger Puppet
- Supplies
- Orange paper
- Yellow paper
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
- Black crayon, marker, or pen
- How To:
- Fold the paper along long edge, approximately 1/3 of page
- Fold the bottom up to slightly overlap the top
- Secure with glue or tape
- With the seam on the outside, fold the paper in half (left to right)
- Then fold back about an inch in so the seam is on the inside, both sides (your paper will appear like an “M” with the seam on the inside)
- Cut out two orange ears
- Now cut out two yellow inner ears
- Last cut out a large yellow circle for a nose
- Glue the ears and nose on
- Decorate with eyes, stripes, mouth, and nose as desired!
